Text Box: OWNER/DIRECTOR - Irv "Whiz" Wisniewski and his wife, Martha, have owned and operated Varsity Day Camp since 1950. Seven years of previous organized camp staff experience include Whiz being a counselor and assistant director at the Toledo Boys' Club Camp at Silver Lake, Campcraft Director at the University of Michigan Fresh Air Camp at Patterson Lake and Program Director at the Absaroka Lodge Boys' Camp near Yellowstone Park, Wyoming. A 1943 Toledo Woodward High School graduate, Whiz served in the Army Air Corps as a 2 nd LT. B-29 Radar Observer- Bombardier instructor. A 1950 graduate of Michigan, Whiz had a highly successful academic/athletic career that included playing with the 1947, '48, and '49 championship football teams coached by Fritz Crisler and Bennie Oosterbaan. The 1948 Rose Bowl team was a 49-0 winner over Southern California. A four letter winner in basketball, Whiz played for Coach Ozzie Cowles with the 1947-48 conference champion team that played in the NCAA tournament in Madison Square Garden. Whiz coached at Hillsdale College for two years and from 1952 to 1989 was at the University of Delaware. A retired Associate Professor of Physical Education, he served as an assistant football coach for 25 years. Delaware had outstanding teams during all those years being Small College National Champions in 1963, 1971 and 1972. Other duties included being Head Basketball Coach for 12 years and Head Golf Coach for 9 years. Whiz has been involved with International Basketball programs since 1966 as consultant to the Polish Olympic Committee and Polish Basketball Federation and has organized USA-All Star team tours for men to Austria in 1985, Hungary in 1987 and to Denmark and Sweden in 1990 as well as tours for women to Sweden in 1988 and to France in 1990. Also, hosting the Austrian Junior National team in 1986 and the Brahe Women's Team from Huskvarna, Sweden in 1989. Varsity Day Camp is truly a family affair. Irv and Martha (Mr. & Mrs. Whiz) are joined all summer by their daughter Mary Whiz (Waterfront Director and Director of Health & Safety), and son John (Business Manager). They are also joined throughout the camp season by their other children: Anne and husband Tom Brattan and their daughters Kristen, Kate and Megan; Pat and wife Karen and their children Erin (& 1st great grandchild, Marlee, July 22, 6# 12oz.), Heather, Seth, Emma, and Amelia; Mike and wife Barbara and their children Erin, Mark, Molly, Caitlin and Jack; John's wife Carolyn and their children Nate and Tara; Jane and husband Craig Selner: and Clare and husband Ken Farrall and their children Peyton and Ken III.
